1. Leaky Faucets

A dripping faucet wastes water and increases your utility bills. Most leaks come from worn-out washers, gaskets, or seals inside the faucet. Fixing a leaky faucet usually involves:

  • Turning off the water supply under the sink

  • Removing the faucet handle

  • Replacing the damaged washer or O-ring

  • Reassembling the faucet and testing for leaks

If the leak persists, the cartridge or valve seat might need replacement. Regular maintenance can prevent leaks from worsening.

2. Running Toilets

A running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water daily. The common causes include:

  • Faulty flapper valve that doesn’t seal properly

  • Broken or misaligned fill valve

  • Chain that’s too tight or tangled

To fix this, check the flapper for wear and replace it if needed. Adjust the chain length so the flapper closes fully. Inspect the fill valve and replace it if it’s malfunctioning. These repairs are usually simple and inexpensive.

3. Clogged Drains

Slow or clogged drains happen when hair, grease, soap, or food particles build up inside pipes. Avoid harsh chemical drain cleaners as they can damage pipes. Instead, try:

  • Using a plunger to clear minor clogs

  • Removing and cleaning the drain trap under sinks

  • Using a drain snake or auger for deeper blockages

Prevent clogs by using drain strainers and avoiding pouring grease or large food scraps down the drain.

4. Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure can make showers and faucets frustrating. Causes include:

  • Mineral buildup in pipes or aerators

  • Leaks in the plumbing system

  • Partially closed shut-off valves

Start by cleaning faucet aerators and showerheads. Check for leaks around visible pipes and under sinks. Ensure all valves are fully open. If pressure remains low, a plumber may need to inspect the main water line.

5. Water Heater Issues

Water heaters can develop problems like no hot water, strange noises, or leaks. Common causes are:

  • Sediment buildup in the tank

  • Faulty thermostat or heating element

  • Corroded pipes or tank

Flushing the tank annually removes sediment. Test the thermostat and heating elements and replace if needed. If the tank leaks, replacement is often the best option.

6. Running or Leaking Pipes

Leaking pipes can cause water damage and mold growth. Signs include damp spots, water stains, or a sudden increase in water bills. To fix leaks:

  • Locate the leak by inspecting pipes carefully

  • Tighten loose joints or replace damaged sections

  • Use pipe repair clamps for temporary fixes

For extensive leaks or corrosion, call a professional plumber to replace pipes safely.

7. Garbage Disposal Problems

Garbage disposals jam or stop working due to food scraps or foreign objects. To fix:

  • Turn off the power before inspecting

  • Use the disposal’s reset button if it’s overheated

  • Use an Allen wrench to manually turn the disposal’s motor shaft and clear jams

  • Avoid putting fibrous or hard items down the disposal

Regular cleaning with ice cubes and citrus peels keeps the disposal fresh and functioning.

8. Sewer System Backup

A sewer backup causes foul odors and slow drains throughout the home. Causes include:

  • Tree roots invading sewer lines

  • Blockages from grease or debris

  • Broken or collapsed pipes

Avoid flushing non-degradable items and pour grease into containers instead of drains. If a backup occurs, call a plumber with a sewer camera to diagnose and clear the blockage.

9. Sump Pump Failure

Homes with basements may have sump pumps to prevent flooding. Failure can result from:

  • Power outages

  • Clogged pump or discharge pipe

  • Mechanical failure

Test your sump pump regularly by pouring water into the pit. Clear any debris and ensure the discharge pipe directs water away from the foundation.

10. Frozen Pipes

In cold climates, pipes can freeze and burst, causing major damage. Prevent frozen pipes by:

  • Insulating exposed pipes

  • Keeping a slow drip of water flowing during extreme cold

  • Sealing gaps that allow cold air near pipes

If pipes freeze, do not use open flames to thaw. Use warm towels or a hairdryer on low heat instead. Call a plumber if pipes burst.
