Why Your Boiler Pressure Keeps Dropping (And What It Means)

What Is Boiler Pressure?

Boiler pressure refers to the amount of water pressure inside a sealed central heating system. Most modern boilers in UK homes operate efficiently when the pressure is between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when cold.

If the pressure drops below this range, the boiler may stop working to protect itself.

Common Reasons Boiler Pressure Drops

1. Water Leaks in the Heating System

Even a small leak in:

  • Radiators

  • Pipe joints

  • Valves

  • The boiler unit itself

can cause pressure to fall gradually over time.

Leaks under floors or behind walls often go unnoticed until pressure problems occur.

2. Bleeding Radiators Too Often

Releasing trapped air from radiators also releases water. Frequent bleeding without repressurising the system will cause pressure loss.

Radiators should only need bleeding occasionally.

The PRV is a safety device that releases water if pressure gets too high. If the valve becomes worn or stuck, it may release water continuously, even when pressure is normal.

This results in repeated pressure drops.

4. Expansion Vessel Problems

The expansion vessel absorbs pressure changes as water heats and cools. If:

  • The vessel loses air

  • The internal diaphragm fails

the system cannot regulate pressure properly, leading to frequent drops.

5. Recently Installed or Repaired Systems

New or recently serviced systems may contain trapped air. As air escapes, pressure naturally decreases and may need one or two top-ups before stabilising.

Persistent drops, however, indicate a fault.

How to Check Your Boiler Pressure

  1. Locate the pressure gauge on the boiler

  2. Check pressure when the system is cold

  3. Confirm it is between 1.0–1.5 bar

If pressure falls below 1.0 bar regularly, further investigation is required.

Is It Safe to Repressurise Your Boiler?

Topping up pressure using the filling loop is usually safe only if:

  • Pressure loss is occasional

  • No visible leaks are present

  • Pressure remains stable after topping up

If pressure drops repeatedly, repressurising is a temporary fix—not a solution.

What Happens If Boiler Pressure Is Ignored?

  • Heating and hot water failure

  • Boiler safety shutdowns

  • Damage to internal components

  • Higher repair costs over time

Low pressure can also cause uneven heating and radiator cold spots.

When to Call a Qualified Plumber or Heating Engineer

You should seek professional help if:

  • Pressure drops within days or hours

  • You need to repressurise frequently

  • Water appears near the boiler or pipes

  • The PRV discharge pipe is dripping constantly
